What’s Included in Your Cruise Fare—and What’s Not? A quick guide.

Welcome aboard, cruise mates! If you’re gearing up for your next sea adventure, one of the most common questions you might have is about what’s included in your cruise fare.

In this guide, I’m sharing what to do in Juneau during a cruise port day, including the best tours, practical tips, and top attractions you can easily explore before your ship sails away.

So, if you’re feeling confused, curious, or concerned about what is included or not in your cruise fare, you’re in the right place.

Today, we’re diving into a quick guide to help you navigate the waters of included amenities and those extra charges that might catch you off guard.

Dining on Board: What's Free and What's Not?

Most cruise lines tout their offerings as “all-inclusive” when it comes to dining, and that’s primarily true. You can certainty enjoy a plethora of options without spending an extra dime:

  • Main Dining Rooms and Buffets: These are the heart of the ship’s culinary scene, where you can indulge in a variety of starters, main courses, and desserts. Complimentary beverages typically include water, regular coffee, and a selection of juices and teas.
  • Casual Eateries and Snack Bars: Spots like the Windjammer, Sorrento’s, Cafe Promenade, and Doghouse on Royal Caribbean ships offer meals included in your cruise fare.
  • Special Nights: Look out for special dining nights in the main dining room, such as Lobster Night, where premium dishes are offered at no additional cost.

However, not all that glitters is gold, or, in this case, included. Specialty restaurants and premium menu items often come with a price tag. These dining venues focus on specific cuisines or luxurious experiences, such as the Wonderland restaurant on some Royal Caribbean ships, which brings a menu and experience inspired by Alice’s adventures.

Beverages: Sip Wisely

While basic drinks are included, the more specialized your beverage, the more likely it is to incur an extra charge:

  • Alcoholic Beverages and Specialty Drinks: These are typically not included and can add up quickly. Drink packages are available for purchase and can be a cost-effective option if you plan on indulging.
  • Soft Drinks and Specialty Coffees: Just like alcohol, these beverages usually require an additional fee. Packages can also cover these.

Room Service: Convenience at a Cost

Room service is generally free during the day on many lines, but late-night orders might incur a fee. Continental breakfast can often be enjoyed in your stateroom without extra charges, though tipping is appreciated.

Entertainment and Activities: Mostly Free, but Sometimes Not...

Cruise ships are floating entertainment hubs, and most of the shows and activities onboard are included. There’s rarely a dull moment, from Broadway-style productions in the main theatre to trivia nights and dance lessons.

However, keep in mind that activities that involve prizes or special access, like Bingo or cooking classes, will cost extra.

Spa and Fitness: Relaxation Isn't Always Free

While access to gyms and basic fitness classes is included, spa treatments such as massages, facials, and hair services come at an additional fee. Booking these services in advance online can sometimes secure you a discount.

Internet Access: Stay Connected for a Fee

Internet service is one of the most common extra expenses on cruise ships. If staying connected is crucial, consider purchasing an internet package, though be prepared for higher costs compared to land-based services.

Bringing it All Together

Navigating what is included in your cruise fare and what is not can be as challenging as steering the ship itself! Always check the specifics with your cruise line before sailing to avoid surprises.
